Nursing Education 

The role of a Nurse Educator in the 21st Century can be less challenging as some may perceive. Consider the availability of various modes of delivery; face to face, online and blended learning. In time past, face to face learning was the only mode of delivery. However, the advancement in technology has created a dynamic approach to nursing education. Nurse educator's are also responsible for creating a student centered environment to encourage competency critical thinking and skills.(1) Therefore, emphasis is placed on innovative teaching strategies, activities that facilitate critical thinking and clinical judgement. Nurse educator's are also responsible for curriculum development and evaluation.

Challenges 

Amid the dynamic role of the nurse educator there exist challenges in fulfilling these roles. Factors such as; diverse learning needs, ensuring clinical competence and technological advancements can cause issues for nurse educators. 



Recommendations

But, these challenges can be mitigated through technological training to assist with competencies as technology advances.  The integration of culturally competent content within course material and lesson plans can assist nurse educators in providing a diverse teaching and learning experience. Lastly, ensuring clinical competence can be done by providing educational materials that are evidenced-based in practice.

Overcoming Challenges 

1. Design models can assist in overcoming challenges faced by nurse educators. The systematic approach of the ADDIE model through providing an avenue for interactive and  efficient learning materials development by educators. It provides the opportunity to analyze, design, develop, implement and evaluate within the classroom. 




2. Lesson plans  can assist by providing structure  and the framework to promote orderly, effective and interactive teaching and learning sessions. Educators can brainstorm the entire course before commencing to avoid errors and provide a professional and consistent experience for students. 

3. Appropriate learning objectives assist in providing content and evaluation suitable for all cognitive levels of learning. Setting S.M.A.R.T objectives assures educators a road map to proper course material to assessment alignment. It also governs the selection of recommended educational activities which aligns with meeting the goals of the learning institution. 

Although the role of the nurse educator is vast, challenges may arise but there are opportunities to mitigate them.
